Canvas is a hotel complex located in the Tulum peninsula in the south of Mexico. Facing the beachfront, the site has a plain topography with natural tropical vegetation. The compound has to include a restaurant area facing the street, ten to twelve rooms or villas and a public space of a beachside lounge and pool, according to the client’s needs and specifications.
The program was arranged alongside a longitudinal axis that crosses the whole site from the street to the beach, a reference to Mayan and prehispanic organization of calzadas. The project is open to the natural surroundings, enjoying private gardens and ocean views. One of the main intentions was to preserve a simple and monolithic construction of every compound building using natural materials, where light and shadows were given more importance, like a painting on a blank canvas.
